Custom quilting is great for that extra-special quilt, or perhaps you are interested putting your quilt into a quilt show. Different parts of the quilt have varying block and border designs and may have stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.
There are many styles of custom quilting from basic freehand patterns to complex heirloom quilting. You can expect to pay about double the cost of edge to edge quilting for basic custom quilting, ($7.70 per square foot), while heirloom quilting can be up to $11 per square foot.
Waiting time for custom quilting is longer than for edge to edge. If you have a deadline, for example, for a quilt show entry, it is wise to allow several months ahead of when the quilt may be needed.

Here is an example of custom quilting by KoolKat
Judie Bellingham won first prize in the Professional Commercially Quilted Section at the Queensland Quilters Show October 2009 with "Taken Leaf of My Senses". Judie (at left) and Kathy were photographed in front of her quilt at the show. Kathy quilted this quilt with extensive ditch-stitching around the applique shapes, echo quilting in the many smal stars and around the applique, finished with a decorative free-hand filler pattern. Judie was thrilled with her win.
